The science behind GenePartner
The GenePartner project was inspired by the celebrated study of Prof. Dr. Claus Wedekind at the University of Bern, Switzerland.
Female volunteers were asked to smell T-shirts worn by different men and rate them for attractiveness. Prof. Wedekind then analyzed the part of the DNA that codes for HLA (human leukocyte antigen) molecules — and found that women consistently preferred the scent of men whose HLA genes were most different from their own. Sensing and classifying these genes is something our bodies do automatically and subconsciously.
HLA molecules play a central role in the immune response, so they are essential for immune resistance. A greater variety of HLA genes means a greater variety of possible immune responses — and, in evolutionary terms, children whose parents differ in their HLA genes are protected against a wider range of diseases. Comparing HLA genes also helps identify kinship and avoid inbreeding.
In 2003 the GenePartner team set out to see whether specific patterns of HLA genes attract each other more strongly. We tested a large number of individuals — both couples and singles — for their HLA genes. The results led to a formula that combines the diversity factor studied by Prof. Wedekind with several further evolutionary factors researched by the Swiss Institute for Behavioral Genetics. The formula estimates the probability of a satisfying and long-lasting relationship between two people; that probability is highest when they are genetically compatible.
